Sweet Success: Year 7 Designers Stitch Up a Storm in Textile Art

Our Year 7 students have been busy transforming simple felt and thread into a vibrant bakery of hand-sewn creations this term.

The "Fabric Donut" project has become a highlight in the Textile Art department, tasking students with designing and constructing their own unique treats from scratch. Beyond the colorful results, the project served as a comprehensive introduction to the world of needlework, requiring significant patience, precision, and focus.

Mastering the Craft

For many students, this project marked the first time they had ever picked up a needle and thread. Throughout the weeks, the classroom was a hive of activity as students mastered several technical skills, including:

  • The Blanket Stitch: Used to create professional, secure edges around the "dough."
  • The Running Stitch: Utilized creatively to add colorful, intricate "sprinkles."
  • Fine Motor Coordination: Navigating the challenges of threading needles and managing tension.

Voices from the Studio

The journey from a piece of flat felt to a 3D creation wasn't without its challenges, but our students showed incredible resilience in the face of tangled threads and complex loops.

"I really like how the blanket stitch makes the edge look," shared Oliver. "It was hard to remember to go through the loop at first, but I got the hang of it."

Emilia focused on the decorative details: "My running stitch sprinkles took ages to do because I wanted them to be all different colors, but I love how bright my donut looks now."

Rhys reflected on the perseverance required: "I accidentally knotted my thread about five times, but I finally finished the icing. The stitches are a bit wonky in places, but it looks good!"

Creativity on Display

We are immensely proud of the craftsmanship and determination shown by our budding designers. These fabric donuts are more than just art pieces; they are a testament to our students' willingness to learn new, tactile skills and push through the "wonky" stages to reach a finished product.

The colorful collection is now on display, showcasing a fantastic array of sprinkles, icing, and—most importantly—hard-earned textile skills. Well done, Year 7!
